Summary

This course will cover the fundamentals and practical aspects of advanced material characterization methods, with a focus on inorganic materials. Students will become familiar with spectroscopy and electron microscopy techniques.

Content

1. Photon and electron interactions with matter

  • Introduction and key concepts
  • Excitation and relaxation mechanisms
  • Connection to materials analysis

2. X-ray spectroscopy

  • Introduction to spectroscopy
  • X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
  • Auger electron spectroscopy
  • X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy

3. Electron microscopy

  • Introduction to electron microscopy
  • Transmission electron microscopy
  • Scanning electron microscopy
  • Scanning transmission electron microscopy

4. Spectroscopy in the microscope

  • Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy
  • Electron energy loss spectroscopy

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the student must be able to:

  • Identify he main materials characterization techniques
  • Interpret their results
  • Select appropriately the most suitable methods for a given material and research challenge
  • Recognize the strengths and limitations of each technique

Assessment methods

The assessment will be made by two components:

  • Small group presentation on a material challenge of their choice (pre-approved by the instructor) and a suitable characterization technique to study such challenge, worth 30% of the final grade
  • Written exam worth 70% of the final grade

Supervision

Office hours No
Assistants No
Others Questions to the teacher during the course
