Summary
This course introduces core ideas and methods in the interdisciplinary field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). We will explore how we can design human-centered systems that are useful, usable, ans beneficial to people in real-world contexts.

Course introduction
- Introduction and overview of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
Project components
- Understanding real-world contexts of use and stakeholder needs
- Framing problems and potential solutions, and stress-testing these framings
- Exploring design spaces through sketching and prototyping, including "matchmaking" between stakeholder needs and technical capabilities
- Evaluating potential design solutions through user testing

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student must be able to:
- Determine the flaws of an interaction design, from the perspectives of users and other stakeholders
- Suggest improvements to an interaction design
- Design interactions
- Plan the different phases of a human-centered design approach
- Critique and revise plans of human-centered design approaches
- Conduct activities at different phases of a human-centered design approach, from user research to design to evaluation
- Identify design best practices
- Analyze data from user research
- Analyze interactions at multiples levels of analysis (e.g., reasoning about implications for individual users, small groups of users, organizations, communities, societies)
- Propose recommendations to improve an interaction design
- Understand implications of HCI concepts and methods for related disciplines (e.g., implications for AI development and evaluation, implications for areas such as education and healthcare)
Teaching methods
- Ex cathedra course including examples to practice
- Group project activities allowing students to put into practice the concepts of the course through the design of a solution aimed at addressing specific human needs
Expected student activities
- Create and present an interactive prototype that illustrates the main screens and user journeys of a system
