Forum Alpinum interroge la permanence des formes et les valeurs patrimoniales de l'habitat de montagne à travers la culture constructive, les ressources locales et les savoir-faire artisanaux, envisagés comme les bases d'une nouvelle vitalité sociale et économique des vallées alpines.

Le 28 mai 2025, un éboulement de roche et de glace entraîne la disparition de Blatten (Lötschental, VS), village pluriséculaire et patrimoine vernaculaire exceptionnel. La population de la vallée souhaite aujourd'hui reconstruire. Se posent alors des questions fondamentales : au-delà de la reconstruction matérielle, comment faire perdurer une culture constructive dans des conditions profondément transformées ? Cette question constitue le point de départ de l'atelier.

Le semestre explore des stratégies typologiques et constructives capables de concilier les caractères permanents de l'habitat alpin avec les exigences de la condition contemporaine. Les projets rechercheront un équilibre entre mémoire et transformation, continuité et innovation, héritages vernaculaires et nouvelles formes d'habiter. Il ne s'agira pas de reproduire des formes disparues, mais d'en réinterpréter les principes afin de définir culturellement les formes de la reconstruction.

L'atelier considère le projet d'architecture comme un instrument de connaissance, de transmission et de continuité face aux enjeux environnementaux contemporains. Les étudiantes et les étudiants développeront un Forum Alpinum réunissant activités artisanales et habitat collectif dans une démarche de prospection paradigmatique post-catastrophe dans la vallée du Lötschental. Ce projet choral est conçu comme un espace de dialogue architectural pour concevoir des perspectives de revitalisation culturelle, sociale et économique des vallées alpines.

Une attention particulière sera portée aux ressources locales, aux matériaux, aux techniques constructives, aux savoir-faire artisanaux et aux filières de production. Le projet sera développé à toutes les échelles, du territoire au détail constructif, en considérant l'architecture comme un système où implantation, typologie, matérialité, usages et modes d'habiter demeurent indissociables.

À travers le cas de Blatten, l'atelier propose ainsi une réflexion plus générale sur l'adaptabilité des territoires alpins soumis à des mutations environnementales, économiques et sociales aussi soudaines que profondes.

On 28 May 2025, a catastrophic rock and ice avalanche destroyed the village of Blatten (Lötschental, Valais), a centuries-old settlement and an outstanding example of vernacular heritage. Today, the inhabitants of the valley seek to rebuild. This raises fundamental questions: beyond the physical reconstruction of buildings, how can a building culture endure under profoundly transformed conditions? This question forms the starting point of the current design studio.

Throughout the semester, students will investigate typological and constructive strategies capable of reconciling the enduring characteristics of Alpine settlements with the demands of contemporary life. Projects will seek a balance between memory and transformation, continuity and innovation, vernacular heritage and new ways of inhabiting. The objective is not to reproduce lost forms, but to reinterpret their underlying principles in order to define a culturally grounded approach to reconstruction.

The studio considers the architectural project as a means of knowledge production, transmission, and continuity in response to contemporary environmental challenges. Students will design a Forum Alpinum combining craft workshops and collective housing as part of a post-disaster speculative project for the Lötschental valley. Conceived as a collective architectural endeavour, the project will provide a space for dialogue through which new perspectives for the cultural, social, and economic revitalisation of Alpine valleys can be explored.

Particular attention will be given to local resources, materials, construction techniques, traditional craftsmanship, and production networks. The project will be developed across all scales, from the territorial scale to the construction detail, considering architecture as an integrated system in which site, typology, materiality, use, and ways of inhabiting remain inseparable.

Through the case of Blatten, the studio ultimately offers a broader reflection on the capacity of Alpine territories to adapt to environmental, economic, and social transformations that are as sudden as they are profound.

Méthode d'enseignement

L'enseignement alterne séminaires, travail de terrain, conférences, critiques collectives et développement du projet. Le semestre débute par un voyage d'étude dans le Lötschental, suivi d'un travail de redessin critique du village disparu afin d'en comprendre les structures territoriales, les formes bâties et les logiques constructives. Cette phase d'analyse constitue le fondement du projet architectural, développé progressivement à toutes les échelles, du territoire au détail constructif. Le travail s'appuie sur le dessin, la maquette, la photographie, les archives et les échanges avec les acteurs du territoire. Les questions de représentation, de matérialité et de construction sont abordées simultanément afin de construire une cohérence entre pensée, forme et matière.

 

The course combines seminars, fieldwork, lectures, collective reviews, and project development. The semester begins with a field trip to the Lötschental valley, followed by a critical redrawing of the destroyed village in order to understand its territorial structure, built form, and constructive logic. This analytical phase forms the foundation of the architectural project, which will gradually be developed across all scales, from the territorial strategy to the construction detail. The design process is supported by drawing, model-making, photography, archival research, and exchanges with local stakeholders. Questions of representation, materiality, and construction are addressed simultaneously to establish coherence between architectural thinking, form, and material expression.

 

Travail attendu

Développement, en binôme, d'un projet d'architecture accompagné des analyses, dessins, maquettes, photographies et documents graphiques nécessaires à sa compréhension, ainsi que d'un argumentaire critique explicitant les choix territoriaux, typologiques et constructifs.

Coûts à prévoir au cours du semestre (à titre indicatif)

- Voyage/Excursion(s) : Il est à prévoir un budget de 60 CHF pour le voyage d'étude obligatoire qui aura lieu du dimanche 13 septembre au mardi 15 septembre dans le Lötschental. Considérer les couts de transport. Il est également fortement conseillé de retourner sur le site par ses propres moyens au cours du semestre.

- Impression : Jeux d'impression A2 pour la discussion intermédiaire et la finale (soit deux jeux de 6 planches = 12 x 5.5 CHF: 66 CHF à la Salle des Périphériques Graphiques)

- Maquettes : Aucun matériaux ou taille de maquette n'étant imposé. Les étudiants peuvent réaliser leur maquette à leur guise et selon leurs moyens (récupération, réemploi, etc).

 

Working in pairs, students will develop an architectural project supported by analytical studies, drawings, models, photographs, and graphic documentation, together with a critical statement explaining the territorial, typological, and constructive decisions that underpin the proposal.

Estimated Costs :

-Field Trip: Students should allow approximately CHF 60 for the compulsory study trip to the Lötschental valley, scheduled from Sunday 13 September to Tuesday 15 September. Transport costs should also be taken into consideration. Students are strongly encouraged to revisit the site independently during the semester.

-Printing: Two sets of A2 presentation boards (mid-term and final review), comprising twelve sheets in total (12 × CHF 5.50 = CHF 66), printed at the Salle des Périphériques Graphiques.

-Models: No specific materials or model scale are prescribed. Students are free to construct their models using materials of their choice, including reused or recycled materials.

 

Méthode d'évaluation

L'évaluation porte sur la qualité de l'analyse, la cohérence du projet, la maîtrise des différentes échelles, la pertinence des choix typologiques et constructifs, la qualité de la représentation ainsi que la participation active à l'ensemble des activités de l'atelier.

 

Assessment will be based on the quality of the analysis, the coherence of the architectural proposal, the ability to work across different scales, the relevance of the typological and constructive choices, the quality of representation, and active participation in all studio activities.
