Summary

"Tackle the type" deals with processes of development and redesign of architectural typologies, and addresses the theme critically under today's contemporary condition. Based on the analysis of a specific building typology, independent projects are to be developed at a specific location.

Content

The studio's approach recognizes typology as the science of specific orders, classifications, uses and forms of building types. It understands typology as a process of type formation. While the thesis of the slow evolution of types was long considered important, today building fabric and ideas of use collide against each other. Therefore, the process of type formation is less comparable to an evolutionary optimization process than to a reinterpretation of the existing. Approaches such as those of Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Aldo Rossi just as much as those of Rafael Moneo will guide our research and be compared with the demands of our contemporary society. The medialization of everyday life, the densification of cities and the necessity of building within existing structures is leading to a new, expanded process of type formation, with which the question of typology will be discussed on a new conceptual level.

This year the studio is dedicated to the typology of stadium buildings. Based on a general analysis of this type, the first semester will be focused on the transformation of the Olympic stadium of La Pontaise in Lausanne. By replacing the previous use, the spatial-organizational principle of the building will be compared with new possible uses and its sustainable interaction with the framework of the urban context will be examined. While the project in the first semester will deal with the complexity of spatial organization and program at an urban scale, we will transfer the same issues to a full-size space during the second semester. Working with selected elements of the building, the result will be a 1:1 pavilion.
