Summary
This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of theoretical and computation modeling approaches applicable to soft and biological matter, which closely aligned with currently active research topics.
Content
This course introduces basic concepts of continuum mechanics, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and differential geometry relevant to the modeling of soft and biological matter. In-depth case studies explore various individual systems, including topics such as:
- Network structure and Biopolymers
- Bubbles and surfactants
- Emulsions and granular materials
- Membranes, vesicles, and shells
- Single cell and cell clusters
The course covers both the analytical treatment of these systems and the detailed development and implementation of numerical simulations.
Keywords
Biomechanics, Biophysics, Continuum mechanics, Statistical mechanics, Soft matter physics, Physics of living system
Learning Prerequisites
Important concepts to start the course
A general knowledge of ordinary and partial differential equations
Basic skills for coding (Matlab, Python, C++, etc)
Elementary continuum solid mechanics and statistical mechanics are very helpful
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student must be able to:
- Describe the importance of mesoscale structures in emergent properties of soft and biological matter
- Develop theoretical framework based on dominant interactions between mesoscale structures
- Solve the governing equations using analytical or numerical methods
