Economics for challenging times

Summary

This course analyzes socio-economic issues related to poverty, inequalities, climate change, globalization, migration, AI, etc. We teach students how to analyze data using quantitative methods in economics and develop solutions compatible with the functioning of market economies.

Content

Assessment methods

Active participation in class (20% of the total grade): Active individual participation will be graded according to the EPFL participation grid. Class attendance is mandatory and will be checked with attendance sheet at each class (each unexcused absence will decrease the participation grade).

Oral presentations (40% of the total grade): On Moodle, you will find a list of questions for oral team presentations associated with each class (various format). You will have to perform 1 of these oral presentations during the term within a team of 2 to 3 classmates.

Final Exam (40% of the total grade): Oral evaluation of your general understanding of the course. You will have to answer a set of general questions related to the entirety of the course. These questions will relate to the material we presented and discussed in class as well as the mandatory readings. This work is individual and will last at most 10 minutes.
