Does more data mean better health? Drawing on health and social psychology, this course questions the biomedical model as socially situated, questioning whether the promises of digital health to improve wellbeing are supported by the research behind them.

During the spring semester, students work in teams, to analyse how the digital health technology explored in autumn is portrayed in everyday life (for instance how it is marketed by companies or discussed on social media, forums or by lifestyle influencers), applying qualitative methods to empirical materials. At the end of the semester, each team presents its analysis to the class. In parallel, students develop a short individual piece of science communication that puts the scientific evidence reviewed in autumn in dialogue with the empirical materials analysed in spring, conveying this to a non-specialist audience in an accessible way.
