Summary

The objective of this course is to provide the knowledge and the way of understanding, at the molecular level, of the functioning of organic chemical reactions. During the course the student will think and solve new problems.

Content

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the student must be able to:

  • Represent organic molecules in three dimensions with correct bond angles and stereo chemical information.
  • Recognize and identify the organic functional groups.
  • Identify a chiral molecule
  • Differentiate the structure of molecules represented by different methods (including Newman and Fisher projections).
  • Apply electrophilic, nucleophilic, reducing and oxidizing properties in chemical reactions.
  • Propose according to the experimental conditions, the mechanisms of nucleophilic substitutions (SN1, SN2) and eliminations (E1, E2)
  • Propose reaction products or reagents or mechanisms involving the following reactions: Electrophilic addition to an alkene, Electrophilic substitution on an aromatic nucleus, Reduction and oxidation of alkene, aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid, ester. Nucleophilic addition on a carbonyl group.
