Summary

The course gives a general understanding of lab automation theory and practical knowledge. It is structured to integrate theoretical foundations, hands-on practical exercises (e.g., Arduino programming), and individualized project analysis.

Content

The course aims at providing to the participant the fundamental principles of lab automation applied to chemistry. It is organized in
theoretical lectures, laboratory visite, practical exercices and a personal automation project.
The theoretical courses are :
--------------------------------------
1. General theory on automation and self-driving laboratories
2. Workflow analysis
3. Automation & robotics
4. Automated high-throughput synthesis
5. Automated high-throughput analysis
6. Data chaining and management
7. Laboratory orchestration & scheduling
8. Self-driving-laboratory algorithmics
In complement :
----------------------
- Microcrontroller (Arduino) coding exercices
- EPFL Swiss Cat+ laboratory visite
Personal project :
------------------------
Each participant chose a relevant chemical process he/she wants to potentially automate in his own laboratory (if no process available, a
list of topics will be provided) and wil mobilize the acquired knowledge to prepare a full automation analysis.
The final evaluation of the course will be an oral exam where the participant present his/her automation project.

Keywords

lab automation, self-driving laboratory, algorithmics, automated synthesis, high-throughput syntheis and analysis

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the student must be able to:

  • Analyze chemistry laboratory process.
  • Assess / Evaluate the feasibility of automating it.
  • Organize prepare a full operational strategy.
