Le cours Visions et Utopies est conçu comme une randonnée aventureuse entre visions idéales et figurations utopiques de l'imaginaire architectural. Un imaginaire merveilleux et surprenant qui a produit un nombre démesuré de visions apparemment invraisemblables. Derrière l'aspect étrange de ces images se cache l'extraordinaire fécondité de la pensée architecturale et des formes tangibles qu'elle procure aux idées et aux pulsions du progrès scientifique. L'architecture, de manière plus fascinante que les autres sciences et de manière plus concrète que les autres arts, a su produire les images d'un futur quotidien, particulièrement radieux et plein d'espoir. L'aventure millénaire de la pensée utopique, entre vérité et vraisemblance, sera transmise à travers une lecture phénoménologique des exemples du répertoire fantastique offert par les projets d'architecture et les descriptions littéraires.

Le travail se concentrera sur les trois grandes utopies de la renaissance dans leurs conception radicale et expérimentale. Utopia de Thomas More, New Atlantis de Francis Bacon et Civitas Solis de Tommaso Campanella sont la base à partir de laquelle sera développé le discours théorique et le travail rhétorique du semestre. L'objectif final sera la production d'une série de scènes théâtrales liées aux passages emblématiques des trois utopies. Il sera demandé aux étudiants d'appliquer leur conscience critique afin de composer un cadre architectural ou urbain pour mettre en scène les narrations. Suivant la représentation traditionnelle du drame, les scènes fictives devront se conformer à une atmosphère vraisemblable.

L'exercice joue ainsi entre paradoxe et "étrangeté familière" afin de réinterpréter le sentiment de détachement de la réalité, typique du roman utopique et du théâtre de la Renaissance. Les images seront composées selon les règles et conventions de l'art figuratif de la Renaissance, afin de construire une narration chorale et cohérente. Le résultat final sera la composition d'un ensemble de scènes scénographiques liées aux trois pièces utopiques. La possibilité d'établir de nouvelles relations entre les archétypes utopiques et les prototypes urbains conduira à une réflexion sur la dialectique formelle entre la pensée utopique et la représentation de la ville idéale.

The course Visions et Utopies is conceived as an adventurous trip between ideal visions and utopic figurations of the architectural imagery. Such a marvellous and surprising imagery produced a huge amount of apparently improbable visions. These images conceal behind their odd appearance the extraordinary richness of the architectural thinking and give tangible form to the abstract ideas and impulses of the scientific progress. Between truth and verisimilitude, the thousand-year-old adventure of utopic thinking will be studied by phenomenologically reading the fantastic repertoire of architectural projects and literary descriptions.

The work will specifically focus on the three main utopias of the Renaissance and on their radical as well as experimental conception. Thomas More's Utopia, Francis Bacon's New Atlantis and Tommaso Campanella's Civitas Solis will be the basis on which to ground the theoretical discourse and the rhetorical exercise of the class. The final objective will be the production of a series of theatrical scenes related to the emblematic passages of the three utopias. The students will be asked to apply their critical attitudes in order to compose an architectural or urban setting for a possible staging of the three narrations. Following the traditional representation of the drama, the fictional scenes will have to conform anyway to a verisimilar atmosphere. In this way the exercise plays between paradox and "familiar strangeness" in order to reinterpret the sense of detachment from reality, that is typical both the utopian novel and the Renaissance theatre.

The images will be composed according to the figurative rules and conventions of Renaissance figurative art, in order to build a choral and cohesive narration. The final outcome will be the composition of a complete and coherent set of acts related to the three utopian plays. The possibility to establish new relations between utopian archetypes and urban prototypes will lead to reflect about the formal dialectic between the utopian though and of the ideal city depiction.
