Summary

This course covers the basics of technical drawings using CAD software, and transmits good practices to have complex, custom mechanical parts manufactured.

Content

A large fraction of experimental physics consists in the development of new instruments. Often these instruments feature custom-made, highly-demanding mecanical elements that have to be designed by PhD students. However, mechanical design and fabrication are not part of standard physicists curriculum, such that the basic methods have to be learned on the fly, leading more often that not to highly inefficient or inadequate solutions or very high costs. . 

 

This course will cover the practical aspects of technical drawings:
- use of CAD software
- turning models into drawings
- specifications of dimensions and tolerances

 

Upon completion of the course, the students will know how to design basic mechanical parts on their own, and will be able to communicate efficiently their needs to relevant professionals. 

 

This is a higly transferable skill that is a common need accross most of the experimental laboratories in physics and accross campus. Many of our graduates will end up working as engineers, where the skills transmitted in this course will be highly valuable.

Note

Every participant is required to come with his/her own laptop with a three button mouse, and the software Autodesk Inventor installed. The software can be obtained at Autodesk Student Access to Education Downloads: https://www.autodesk.com/education/edu-software/overview.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, the student must be able to:

  • produce technical drawings, manufacture simple parts using mechanical workshop tools
