SUSTAINABLE REALITY I "critical mass" EAST Design Studio explore la relation entre l'intention de conception, l'utilisation des matériaux et les éléments architecturaux. L'objectif est de développer des méthodes de conception circulaire durable. (the studio will be held in english)

Contenu

The building material traditionally comes from nature. Anchored in their territory, materials helped to culturally define our building environment and, by their character, each material offers a variety of design possibilities. In their aesthetics we could find territorial similarities and differences. Thus, the art of building was shaped by the use of materials, the social understanding of space, and the meaningful design of forms.
Today, we do not only look at territory and its resources from a "raw" point of view. Urban spaces are also sources of materials. Studio EAST dedicates 4 years to selected groups of materials in order to investigate their SUSTAINABLE REALITY. The outcome of each year will be shared in an open source publication.

In the first part, the studio will deal with mineral materials under the term CRITICAL MASS. We will experiment with stones from natural but also urban contexts; analyse methods of industrial production and develop aesthetic related categories for a sustainable architectural perception. The first semester will focus on architectural elements, material use and masonry. The design studio will start by building a database and thus create a basis for creative thinking. In the second semester, the course will expand to include the topic of architectural type with the programme of housing. Here we will confront the current practice with adaptable concepts for a social and sustainable housing, capable to tackle contemporary challenges.

A la fin de ce cours l'étudiant doit être capable de:

Analyser a material according its potential resources
Identifier and understand the relation between architectural elements and the material they are made of
Analyser a site, create spatial and tactile atmospheres
Créer up a database
Dessiner independently a consistent architectural project
Expliquer a design concept and its theoretical framework
Représenter a project in an adequate and clear manner using various means of presentation
Etablir collaborative partnerships working methods

Méthode d'enseignement

group work, individual work, lectures, studio work, round table discussions, study trip, intermediate review and final review, technical tool workshops (3D), craftsmanship: masonry

Méthode d'évaluation

Final critique of the project at the end of each semester. Evolution of the project through studio work, table critics, participation in pedagogic activities (50%), presentations and final project (50%).
