Summary
This course covers the basics of manufacturing using lathe, drilling and milling machines. This includes the safe operation of these machine, that students can then later use on their own at the IPHYS facilities.
Content
A large fraction of experimental physics consists in the development of new instruments. Often these instruments feature custom-made, highly-demanding mecanical elements that have to be designed by PhD students. However, machining is not part of standard physicists curriculum, and students often cannot safely fabricate even the simplest parts.
It will also introduce the basic fabrication methods using a hands-on approach:
- Basic introduction to lathe, drilling and milling machines
- safety measures
- choice of materials and methods
Upon completion of the course, the students will know how to realize basic mecanical parts on their own.
This is a higly transferable skill that is a common need accross most of the experimental laboratories in physics and accross campus. Many of our graduates will end up working as engineers, where the skills transmitted in this course will be highly valuable.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student must be able to:
- produce technical drawings
- manufacture simple parts using mechanical workshop tools
